Carnival Season of February is called Farsang in Hungary. It is a festive period that lasts several weeks in February. It is a fun season with masquerade balls and folk celebrations. The origin of this period is that people wanted to scare the cold winter months away, and wait for the better, spring weather. One of the major events of this period in Hungary is the so-called Busójárás held between February 23 and 28 in the southern part of the county, in the city of Mohács. Scary-looking men with wooden masks and horns run around chasing women and frightening all people around. Budapest often boasts various Farsang events as well, such as festive programs and playful parades, where visitors can enjoy the special Carnival atmosphere. In the neighbourhood of our hotel, Castle Garden Bazaar also holds a Farsang event at the end of the month.
